Bundesliga 2 - "Brutally annoying": FCN without shooting luck against HSV

Florian Hübner was not the only one who found this defeat at the end of the year "brutally annoying". The defender reflected the general mood at 1. FC Nürnberg after the unfortunate 0:2 (0:0) against Hamburger SV on Saturday in the 2nd Bundesliga. Goalkeeper Carl Klaus, who had deputized for the injured Christian Mathenia, called the unsuccessful end to the first half of the season "very, very, very bitter". HSV coach Tim Walter, on the other hand, threw his arms up in jubilation at the visitors' late goals.

Goalscorer Robert Glatzel scored in the 80th minute in front of 41,276 spectators for Hamburg, who go into the short winter break in third place in the table with 31 points. Substitute Jean-Luc Dompé increased the lead deep into stoppage time (90.+7). FCN (24 points) missed out on a successful 2023 after hitting a total of three posts or crossbars. "The ball didn't want to cross the line today. You don't have to lose the game 2-0," complained coach Cristian Fiél.

After the start of the match was marked by fan protests against the DFL's investor deal, a wild game developed with numerous mistakes, large spaces and plenty of chances to score. HSV's top scorer Glatzel first failed to hit the ball in the best position (19th minute). Shortly afterwards, attacker Benjamin Goller ran alone towards the HSV goal, but was caught and stopped (20'). Johannes Geis missed the 1:0 for the "Club" with a shot that hit the post (27').

Against HSV, who were extremely vulnerable defensively, Nuremberg should have taken the lead after the break at the latest. Within a few seconds, Daichi Hayashi hit the crossbar and HSV defender William Mikelbrencis headed the rebound against his own post (57'). "We had one or two chances that had to go in," commented Fiél.

At the other end, Geis, who had come into the starting eleven for the first time and played a good game without rhythm, blocked a shot from Glatzel at the highest level (66'). The attacker then used his third great finish to score the decisive first goal. "Today was a game where you can beat HSV," Hübner summed up after the defeat. Nevertheless, the defender spoke of a decent first half of the season: "24 points, that's fine."
