Initiate a task entailing the development of an initiative. - Brief work experience program helps youths connect with potential employers.
Students in Berlin can now take advantage of more chances to explore potential career paths through short-term internships. This opportunity is open to youths aged 15 and above from July 1st to August 30th and can last for one or more days. The aim is to allow them to mingle with companies, make connections, and discover their passions and abilities, according to Education Senator Katharina Günther-Wünsche. She was speaking at the project's presentation on Wednesday and is also the patron of the "Berlinen Praktikumswoche." Young people can now sign up for these internships through a separate online platform.
Increasing internship possibilities
During the initial pilot project last year, approximately 1,000 participants completed over 1,400 days of internships. For the summer, it is said that more than 5,000 internship days will be available.
The Education Administration, Labor and Social Administration, Chamber of Crafts, and Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) are all involved in this endeavor. Günther-Wünsche emphasized the importance of internships and career guidance, stating that the Praktikumswoche is a valuable chance for young people between the ages of 15 and 18. It can potentially lead them to take part in more structured, in-depth internships.
Labor Senator Cansel Kiziltepe (SPD) highlighted the significance of gaining hands-on experience in different industries. Internships play a pivotal role in helping young people determine which profession suits them best before making a commitment. Misconceptions regarding the workforce can make it challenging for companies to find suitable apprentices.
Internships are a boost for companies
Stefan Spieker, Vice President of the IHK Berlin, stressed how companies can use internships as a tool to stand out in their search for suitable apprentices. "We need to continue highlighting the importance of apprenticeships. If we don't advertise, we won't find any apprentices," Spieker said. Additionally, the senate and IHK Berlin have agreed to create at least 2,000 additional apprenticeship positions in Berlin by the end of April 2025 to avoid the apprenticeship levy. "We're afraid. We want to somehow avoid this bureaucratic beast known as the apprenticeship levy," Spieker added.
