Shipping - Bremerhaven on course for record cruise passenger numbers
The cruise industry in Bremerhaven is on course for a record: by the end of the year, around 320,000 passengers will have embarked or disembarked in the maritime city, said Andrea Kamjunke from the Columbus Cruise Center cruise terminal on Monday. The previous record was set in 2019, when almost 250,000 passengers were counted on 115 ship calls. In total, more than 100 cruise ships registered for 2023. "They were more fully booked than originally expected," said Kamjunke. "That was not foreseeable at the beginning of the year." The peak season is from May to the beginning of October.
Mein Schiff 3 was docked in Bremerhaven on Monday and is expected to return on December 10 and 17. Kamjunke is not expecting a new record for 2024, as the shipping companies Costa and Aida will no longer be calling at Bremerhaven. This has reduced the number of ship registrations to less than 100.
