Parties - Bremen SPD must postpone structural reform

The Bremen SPD was unable to agree on a structural reform at a heated extraordinary party conference. On Wednesday evening, a proposal by the state executive board was ultimately approved by a majority, which provides for a working group to be set up again, according to the party spokesperson. The group is trying to find a consensus.

The background to the reform plan is that the SPD now has fewer members. The party has lost 25 percent of its members in around ten years, said party leader Reinhold Wetjen. In addition, the majority of party members are over 60 years old. "We have an age structure that will be very difficult in the coming years," said Wetjen. The chairman's speech was interrupted several times by heckling.

The core of the planned reform is the merger of the Bremen-Nord and Bremen-Stadt sub-districts. Sub-districts are located above the local associations in the party structure. There was opposition to the plan from the Bremen-North sub-district. For example, Ute Reimers-Bruns, a member of parliament, criticized the fact that the merger was to take place against the will of the sub-district.
