Bregenz Festival: Quarter of "Freischütz" tickets booked

Around eight months before the start of the next Bregenz Festival on Lake Constance, the organizers have presented a preview of the upcoming season. Next year, the balls will be cast on the lake stage for "Freischütz". In addition to the German-language opera hit by Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826), the program includes an emotional Rossini work in the Festspielhaus, two world premieres on the Werkstattbühne as well as large and small concerts and the opera studio. A total of around 80 events for 213,000 visitors are planned for the 78th Festival from July 17 to August 18, 2024, it was announced in Bregenz on Wednesday.

"Freischütz" director Philipp Stölzl is already known on the lake stage for his "Rigoletto" production, which was shown in 2019 and 2021. Next year, the Munich native will not only be responsible for the direction, but also for the stage and lighting design. According to the organizers, a total of 185,000 tickets are on offer for 26 evenings, around a quarter of which have already been booked. One day after the "Freischütz" premiere, Gioachino Rossini's (1792-1868) opera "Tancredi" (directed by Jan Philipp Gloger) will also be performed at the Festspielhaus for the first time on July 18, 2024.

The Bregenz Festival is known worldwide for its monumental stage sets. The festival's main plays are always performed for two years. The opera "Madame Butterfly" by Italian composer Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) was last performed on the lake stage. The coming season will also be the last for Artistic Director Elisabeth Sobotka. From the 2025 season, Lilli Paasikivi from Finland will take over as artistic director, while Sobotka will move to the Berlin State Opera after the summer of 2024. The Vienna-born cultural manager has headed the festival on Lake Constance since 2015.

At the Bregenz Festival, visitors can expect to enjoy a German-language opera hit, "Freischütz," directed by Philipp Stölzl, who previously showcased his "Rigoletto" production on the lake stage. Moreover, Gioachino Rossini's opera "Tancredi" will also be performed at the Festspielhaus, following "Freischütz," making the 2024 festival an exciting mixture of music and theater events.
