- Bredow-Werndl's dressage rider also wins gold in the individual
Jessica von Bredow-Werndl has won her second Olympic gold medal. A day after winning with the German team, the 38-year-old dressage rider triumphed again on Sunday with Dalera in the individual event. Von Bredow-Werndl won with 90.093 points, ahead of her teammate Isabell Werth, who rode Wendy to silver. Bronze went to the British rider Charlotte Fry with Glamourdale.
Von Bredow-Werndl secured Germany's fifth gold medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics, three of which came from equestrian sports. She and Werth, along with Frederic Wandres on Bluetooth, had won gold in the team event the previous day. Before that, eventing rider Michael Jung had won gold in the individual competition.
Riding her mare to Edith Piaf's "Non, je ne regrette rien" in front of 15,000 spectators at the Palace of Versailles, Von Bredow-Werndl delivered a stunning performance and celebrated a double victory in individual and team events, just as she had done at the Tokyo Olympics.
But Werth wasn't left behind. The 55-year-old had set the first benchmark with Wendy and went on to secure her 14th Olympic medal, with eight golds and six silvers. By winning the team event, she had already surpassed former canoeist Birgit Fischer as Germany's most successful Olympian.
Werth's unique career began at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, where she won team gold with Gigolo. She repeated the feat four years later with the same horse and went on to win gold with Satchmo, Weihegold, and Bella Rose. Werth's remarkable record also includes nine World Championship titles.
Jessica von Bredow-Werndl's double gold in dressage further cemented Germany's dominance in equestrian events at the Olympics. Despite retiring from competitive riding, Isabell Werth, also from Germany, continues to make history with her impressive Olympic medal count.
