The annual"Bread for the World" fundraising campaign was opened for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in Sassnitz on Sunday. "Sowing change" is the theme of Diakonie's 65th nationwide fundraising campaign, according to a spokeswoman for the Protestant church's social welfare organization. Almost 800 million people around the world are suffering from hunger, mainly as a result of armed conflicts and climate change. The opening service in Sassnitz was also attended by the bishop of MV, Tilman Jeremias.

Bread for the World" says that its work focuses on supporting projects in the countries of the South. It works closely with local, often church-based partner organizations.

According to the Diakonie spokesperson, the willingness to donate has increased again in MV after a decline in 2021. The level of 2020, when a good one million euros was collected in the north-east, has not yet been reached again. Last year, almost 747,000 euros were donated to "Bread for the World" in MV.

The campaign is traditionally launched on 1 Advent. The nationwide opening service took place in Leipzig. Former German President Joachim Gauck said there were many millions of hungry people in a world of plenty. It is not just about food, but also about justice. The global food system is not sustainable and fair; it favors the strong and disadvantages the weak.
