Migration - Brawl at the Tegel arrival center with around 100 people involved

Social Affairs Senator Cansel Kiziltepe has promised an investigation following violent clashes in the refugee accommodation at the former Tegel Airport. "We will get to the bottom of these clashes very quickly together with all those involved, with the operator consortium, the security staff, the police and the State Office for Refugee Affairs," said the SPD politician at the plenary session in the House of Representatives on Thursday.

Kiziltepe points out consequences

Kiziltepe was referring to an incident on Monday night when a brawl broke out in Tegel. After initial talks with the security service provider and the police, for example, there have already been consequences. The groups involved were separated. "There were also some bans from the premises," said Kiziltepe. She had no knowledge of any other incidents to date. The confrontation on Monday night was an isolated incident on this scale. The "Tagesspiegel" had previously reported on it.

According to a spokesperson for the Berlin police, there were major incidents at the arrival center on the site of the former airport in northwest Berlin on two days. There were several fights with a total of seven injured people, one of whom was taken to hospital.

Police speak of two incidents in Tegel

According to the police, five people were injured in the night from Sunday to Monday. According to the report, there were initially minor altercations and then a major brawl between a group of Kurdish and Arab origin. Around 100 people were involved, some of whom also had knives.

According to the police spokesman, the background to the altercation, which began at around two o'clock in the morning, is still being investigated. This also applies to the question of what role the security staff played. Investigations are underway into dangerous bodily harm and a particularly serious case of breach of the peace. The police operation only ended at around 8.30 am.

One injured in another altercation

According to the police, there was another incident on Tuesday evening at around 9.30 pm. This initially involved an altercation with around 20 people. A 19-year-old Syrian was injured and a Turkish man (36) is suspected. He is said to have been involved in the altercation on Monday and was also injured twice. On Tuesday, the police were later alerted with the information that there was a brawl involving 300 people. However, the officers found nothing of the sort. However, the atmosphere had become heated and a hall had been cleared.

"I would like to make it clear here that social conflicts can of course occur in such large accommodations, which are not what we want," said Kiziltepe. "That cannot be ruled out, because so many people - just over 5,000 - live in this facility in a very confined space for months, not days as originally planned."
