Braunschweig parts ways with sports director Peter Vollmann
Second-division soccer club Eintracht Braunschweig has parted ways with sporting director Peter Vollmann. The club made the announcement on Tuesday. After just one win this season and nine games without a win, the Lower Saxons are currently bottom of the table. Benjamin Kessel, who was installed as sporting director in the summer and was due to take over from Vollmann anyway, will now take on more responsibility earlier than planned and expand his remit.
"After the poor start to the season and a thorough analysis of the past few months, we have come to the decision to make a change in the sporting management, also with a view to the future," said Jens-Uwe Freitag, chairman of the Braunschweig supervisory board, according to the club's press release.
Vollmann had also been identified by some fans as the man responsible for the club's sporting crisis. Almost 17 years after his time as Eintracht coach, the now 65-year-old returned to Hamburger Straße as sporting director at the start of the 2019/20 season. The team was promoted to the 2nd division in 2020, but had to drop back down a year later. The next promotion came in 2022. Last season, the team managed to stay in the league in 15th place.
"We have full confidence in Benjamin and will give him the best possible support," said Braunschweig president Nicole Kumpis about Vollmann's successor Kessel. "The primary goal is to stabilize the team as quickly as possible together with the new head coach and achieve a turnaround," announced the 36-year-old.
Eintracht had already dismissed coach Jens Härtel on October 23. Marc Pfitzner took over in the two games that followed, but suffered defeats against Fortuna Düsseldorf (1:4) and in the Lower Saxony derby against Hannover 96 (0:2). The new coach is to be presented this week. Former Osnabrück and Bielefeld coach Daniel Scherning (40) is the first candidate.
Eintracht Braunschweig is currently struggling in Bundesliga 2, having only managed one win this season and experiencing a nine-game winless streak, placing them at the bottom of the table. With this poor performance, the club decided to part ways with their sporting director, Peter Vollmann, in an effort to turn things around.
Following the departure of Peter Vollmann, Benjamin Kessel, who was previously installed as sporting director and was set to take over from Vollmann, will now assume more responsibility and expand his role earlier than planned.
