Brandenburg cannot afford its own art collection

The state of Brandenburg does not provide any funding for its own art collection. This is quite common in other federal states.

Art - Brandenburg cannot afford its own art collection

The state of Brandenburg is foregoing its own art collection. The budget does not provide for "an independent budget for art acquisitions", said a spokesperson for the Brandenburg Ministry of Culture when asked. It is not the task of the state to be active as a museum. Rather, the state should create good conditions for art, culture and the work of visual artists, said the spokesperson for the ministry headed by Manja Schüle (SPD).

However, the ministry spokesperson explained that the individual ministries could certainly purchase art and regulate this individually as required. "If art purchases are to be made, these are to be paid for from the respective material budget." The Ministry of Culture, for example, "only makes art purchases on certain occasions". Following the extensive renovation of the listed building, it was decided to furnish some rooms in the ministry with contemporary visual art. "In 2021, a total of eleven works by nine artists were purchased for 73,600 euros," explained the spokesperson. In 2022, a further five works were purchased for just under 30,000 euros.

Other federal states maintain their own art collections. The state of Saxony-Anhalt purchased works of art for around 101,500 euros this year alone. This involved 17 works by seven artists. Five artists' books were also purchased. In addition, there were grants for three purchases amounting to almost 41,000 euros.

According to the Brandenburg Ministry of Culture, its support for the visual arts focuses on artists' fees and creates conditions for artistic work through grants, among other things. The museums in the state of Brandenburg have their own budgets for acquisitions, including, for example, the Brandenburg State Museum of Modern Art with its locations in Cottbus and Frankfurt (Oder).

The SPD-led Ministry of Culture in Brandenburg advocates for creating favorable conditions for artists and art, rather than maintaining an independent art collection like Potsdam. Despite this, the ministry occasionally purchases contemporary art, such as the eleven works bought in 2021 for 73,600 euros. Contrarily, other federal states, such as Saxony-Anhalt, actively acquire and maintain their own art collections, like the recent 17 works procured for around 101,500 euros.
