Volleyball - BR Volleys on a rollercoaster ride to the cup final
Volleyball cup matches between the Berlin Volleys and SVG Lüneburg are obviously not without spectacle. On Wednesday in the semi-final in the Max-Schmeling-Halle, for the third time in a row, the tie-break decided the outcome between the two teams. "It was a strange game with lots of ups and downs," said Volleys captain Ruben Schott afterwards about his team's 3:2 victory (25:20, 21:25, 25:19, 16:25, 15:11). Lüneburg's coach Stefan Hübner said: "The whole game was a bit freaky."
The defending cup holders from the capital will now face Volleys Herrsching in the final on March 3 in Mannheim. Around 10,000 spectators will be there. "I'm really looking forward to this stage," said Berlin's middle blocker Timo Tammemaa.
It was the third time since 2018 that the BR Volleys had to face Lüneburg in the cup competition. All three games went the maximum distance. In the first encounter in Hamburg, the Berliners lost 3:2 in the semi-final after leading 2:0 in sets. Last season, the capital city club won 3:2 at home in the quarter-finals, with the tie-break only ending 27:25 on the twelfth match point.
This time, the match was a rollercoaster ride for both teams. The BR Volleys dominated the first and third sets, but their opponents were dominant in the second and fourth rounds. "We were then much more consistent again in the tie-break," said Schott. Marek Sotola, Berlin's most successful attacker with 30 points, was ultimately satisfied: "We never gave up and fought to the end."
