Champions League - BR Volleys lose 1:3 in Piacenza
The Berlin Volleys missed out on a second win in the Champions League. The German volleyball champions lost 1:3 (23:25, 22:25, 25:22, 19:25) at top Italian team GSD Piacenza on Wednesday evening. Despite the return of Timo Tammemaa, Daniel Malescha and Timothée Carle, head coach Joel Banks' team was unable to score any points on the international stage for the first time this season. Nevertheless, it was a match of equals where, apart from the final set, both teams played on equal terms.
The Berliners had previously won 3:0 against Benfica Lisbon in the top flight and picked up a point in a 2:3 draw in Ankara. The top teams from the five groups go straight through to the quarter-finals. The runners-up and the best third-placed team will play out the remaining quarter-final participants among themselves.
The Volleys will next play in the league on Sunday against SSC Karlsruhe (4.30 p.m./Dyn), before the return match against Ankara (7.30 p.m./Sportdeutschland.tv) three days later.
