Gladbach's fresh recruit, Tim Kleindienst, voiced his discontent towards the referees and the VAR following their unfortunate loss against Leverkusen title holders. Expressing his frustration post-match, he mentioned, "It's pretty infuriating," on the streaming platform DAZN. "It seems like an unnecessary hassle. Every 50:50 call was reviewed, every goal was meticulously analyzed. It usually feels like they don't want us to score anything."

Despite being down by 0:2, Gladbach managed to claw their way back into the game with goals from Nico Elvedi (59.) and Kleindienst himself (85.) to tie it at 2:2. However, Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz clinched the win for the champs in extra time (90.+11) scoring the rebound off a missed penalty, which was initially called against Gladbach goalkeeper Jonas Omlin. The penalty was only awarded following VAR intervention.

Conversely, a possible goal from Kleindienst right before the break didn't make it despite VAR review (44.). The referee, Robert Schröder, even took a look at the incident himself on the sideline.

After sharing his thoughts on the refereeing and VAR decisions, Tim Kleindienst expressed his hope for a fairer treatment in future matches, saying, "I hope the new entry in refereeing can bring some balance and fairness to the game." In the aftermath of the VAR review that denied his potential goal before halftime, Kleindienst remained confident, stating, "We'll keep pushing, and hopefully, our new entries on the field can help us turn things around in our next matches."
