Bornplatz synagogue: money approved for architectural competition

The planned reconstruction of Hamburg's Bornplatz Synagogue is getting closer. Following the successful completion of a feasibility study, an architectural competition can now be put out to tender. The Bundestag Budget Committee approved 13.2 million euros for this on Thursday, as announced by the Bornplatz Synagogue Foundation. The money is to flow next year and the year after. Metin Hakverdi, Hamburg SPD member of the budget committee, was delighted with the decision: "The Bornplatz Synagogue will become a symbol of diversity in our city and of responsibility for the past and future of our country."

The synagogue in the Grindel district, which was inaugurated in 1906, was vandalized and desecrated by the National Socialists 85 years ago. In 1939, the building had to be demolished at the expense of the Jewish community and the property was expropriated. At the end of September, the town council unanimously decided to return the property to the community. In September last year, the results of a feasibility study by Frankfurt architects Wandel Lorch Götze Wach were presented.

The Bornplatz Synagogue Foundation intends to start the architectural competition this year. In addition, the promised funds will also be used to prepare for the demolition of the high-rise bunker built during the war on the site of the former synagogue. "The Nazi bunker will no longer stand in the way of the future of Jewish life," said Daniel Sheffer, Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

  1. The reconstruction of the Bornplatz Synagogue, a symbol of religious diversity and historical responsibility, is significantly aided by the 13.2 million euros approved by the Bundestag Budget Committee for its architectural competition.
  2. The history of the Bornplatz Synagogue in Hamburg is marked by acts of desecration and expropriation during National Socialism, with the Jewish community forced to demolish the building in 1939 and lose its property.
  3. The renewal of the synagogue's architecture, as well as the removal of the Nazi bunker, are key components of the Judaism-focused project, which aims to preserve the past and foster a vibrant future for the community.
