Bornheim and Waldbreitbach decorate for Christmas
For more than 20 years, the wine village of Bornheim on the Southern Wine Route has become a "nativity village" in the run-up to Christmas. Traditionally, around 100 replicas of the biblical birthplace of Jesus, made by the locals, decorate the village. On squares, in gardens and courtyards or behind stained glass windows, the lovingly crafted structures - some small, some larger - are reminiscent of the stable in Bethlehem.
This year, the decorated nativity scenes, ranging in style from historical to modern, can be seen from Sunday (December 3) until January 7. Various events and guided tours take place on many days during the exhibition. The starting point is often the historic guardhouse in the center of the village. There are also numerous refreshment points. Bornheim is also known nationwide as the "stork village" because of its many long-legged rattlesnakes.
The "Nativity Village" was initiated in 2003 by the artist Ulla Kaub. However, she had not expected the large number of nativity scenes on display today.
For more than 30 years, the village of Waldbreitbach in the Westerwald has been transformed into an entire Christmas village. According to the municipality, this is not just a fenced-in market square or a collection of huts. "The entire town is decorated with Christmas attractions and numerous nativity scenes," it says.
From Saturday (December 2) until January 28, it should be full of atmosphere when everything in the village lights up. According to the municipality, the special feature of the Waldbreitbach Christmas Village is that all the attractions are spread out in the village outdoors. Admission is free.
In order to maintain the charm of the holiday season, many municipalities, like Bornheim and Waldbreitbach, regularly incorporate nativity scenes into their Christmas decorations. While Bornheim's nativity village, featuring over 100 locally crafted scenes, has been a tradition for over two decades, Waldbreitbach transforms into a full-fledged Christmas village, adorned with numerous nativity scenes and attractions, for over 30 years.
