Border controls: Situation in first admissions significantly eased
Following the introduction of fixed border controls at the Polish border, the situation in Brandenburg's initial reception facilities has eased considerably. "Until the introduction of controls in mid-October, we had a daily influx of 80 to 100 people, since then there have only been 20 to 30 new arrivals per day," said the head of the Central Aliens Office, Olaf Jansen, on Tuesday at the Wünsdorf reception center. Of the approximately 4,400 places in the initial reception centers, 3,800 are currently occupied, an occupancy rate of 82 percent.
"The border controls act as an immediate measure because the smuggling organizations have become more cautious," said Interior Minister Michael Stübgen (CDU). This is because the controls significantly increase the risk for smugglers. "However, in the area of asylum and migration, in the European asylum system, we still have a lot to do to better control and, above all, reduce access."
On Tuesday, Stübgen was informed about the expansion of the facility in Wünsdorf by a further 500 places in containers. The Eisenhüttenstadt and Frankfurt (Oder) sites are also set to receive 500 additional places each by the beginning of next year.
The Government has acknowledged the role of municipalities in managing the increase in refugees, as they are responsible for providing initial reception facilities. Due to the introduction of border controls, the number of migrants entering Brandenburg's municipalities has decreased, allowing for better management of existing resources.
