Minister of the Interior - Border controls: Schuster wants extension to six months
Saxony's Interior Minister Armin Schuster (CDU) has called for the stationary controls at the borders with Poland and the Czech Republic to be extended to six months. Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) must abandon her 14-day extension rhythm, Schuster said on Tuesday after the cabinet meeting in Dresden. "This is the wrong article in the Schengen Borders Code. The right one is Article 25, which is the one we apply in Bavaria and then it runs for six months". He had no desire to have to answer the question every week as to what would happen when the controls expire in 14 days' time. With a view to the forthcoming conference of interior ministers, Schuster spoke of a "clear expectation" of his counterparts towards Faeser.
Schuster had recently repeatedly described the border controls with Poland and the Czech Republic as a success. "Since border controls have been in place, there has been a reduction in the number of refugees apprehended to around 20 to 25 per week and virtually no more smugglers," the CDU politician said recently. Border controls were introduced in mid-October. Schuster had repeatedly called for them in the previous months.
