Books are the favorite Christmas gift

When looking for Christmas presents, many people in North Rhine-Westphalia opt for the classics: books (49%), clothing and shoes (46%) and cosmetics (46%) are particularly popular and frequently given as gifts, according to a representative survey by the FOM University of Applied Sciences for Economics and Management presented on Wednesday. However, the most money is spent on smartphones (151 euros), travel and leisure activities (138 euros).

Despite wars, inflation and economic uncertainty, consumers are in a spending mood ahead of the festive season, according to the study. According to the study, people in NRW spend an average of 505 euros on gifts, with men spending slightly more (539 euros) than women (471 euros). 55.7 percent of respondents plan to spend the same amount of money on gifts as last year. 25.8 percent want to spend more, 18.5 percent less. "People are not making Christmas dependent on the political climate," said Oliver Gansser, the scientific director of the study. Spending on gifts shows the high value placed on Christmas.

According to the survey, men often do their Christmas shopping later. Women usually take care of the majority of their presents in October or November and in the first half of December. Meanwhile, many men tend to buy at the last minute, i.e. in the week before Christmas.

In North Rhine-Westphalia, retail trade sees a surge during the Christmas season, with books being among the most popular gifts for the occasion. Many individuals choose to purchase books as a thoughtful present during this festive period.

During their annual holiday shopping, some individuals may decide to visit their local retail trade outlets to find the perfect Christmas gift, and among these offerings, they might come across a selection of books perfect for gifting during the upcoming holiday season.
