Bayer Leverkusen - Boniface: Transfer to Leverkusen because of Florian Wirtz
With twelve goals and six assists in 18 competitive matches,Victor Boniface is one of the guarantors of Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen's run of success. There was a reason why the Nigerian soccer striker moved to the Werkself in the summer: "Florian Wirtz for sure," said the 22-year-old in an interview with "Sportbuzer" (Saturday).
He had studied videos of the Leverkusen players before his transfer. He didn't know Wirtz (20) until then. "But after just this one game, it was clear to me that Flo is a brilliant footballer, a magician. When my advisor told me about Bayer's interest, it was immediately clear to me that I would love to play in a team with him," said the attacker, who arrived in the summer from Belgian first division club Royale Union Saint-Gilloise for 20 million euros. In his home country Nigeria, every soccer fan now knows Bayer Leverkusen.
Boniface last scored on Thursday in the 2:0 Europa League win against Swedish cup winners BK Häcken, which puts Bayer into the round of 16 ahead of schedule. Leverkusen are also still unbeaten in the Bundesliga. Coach Xabi Alonso has played a big part in this. "He was right at the top as a player and has won pretty much everything you can win: Champions League with Real and Liverpool, the World Cup and European Championship title with Spain. And he has played under three of the best coaches: José Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, Pep Guardiola. Like these coaches, he is a strategist who understands the game down to the smallest detail. But he's also a fighter and always demands one hundred percent from us," said Boniface.
