Bombs defused in Kiel: over 7000 people evacuated

The explosive ordnance disposal service defused two aerial bombs in the Schwentine in Kiel on Sunday. "The defusing of both bombs has been successfully completed. We will shortly be lifting the road closures so that everyone can return home," the police announced on X (formerly Twitter). Because of the bombs, around 7300 people in the Kiel districts of Neumühlen-Dietrichsdorf and Wellingdorf had to temporarily leave their homes. The canteen of the Ellerbeker School was available as alternative accommodation.

The 500-kilo American bomb had been found during exploratory work by an explosive ordnance disposal company. Employees of the explosive ordnance disposal service then came across another aerial bomb from the Second World War in the river. The British 250-kilo bomb was defused at the same time. The second discovery did not change the planned procedure and exclusion radius.

The area around the mouth of the Schwentine was closed off over a large area, with roads on both sides affected. Crew members from ships moored there also had to leave. According to the police, the B502 was not affected by the closure.

In such emergencies, it's crucial to follow the authorities' instructions immediately. The successful defusing of the two World War II bombs led to the evacuation of approximately 7300 people in Kiel.
