Restricted area is being checked - Bomb found in the forest near the Tesla factory

After the discovery of a bomb from World War II near Tesla's US electric car factory in Grünheide, Berlin, the establishment of a safety perimeter is being tested. In the wooded area where the extension of the Tesla grounds is planned, according to a new building plan, environmental activists have been protesting with a camp since the end of February.

The bomb was found in the wooded area where the extension is planned, said Nico Bauermeister, head of the order office of the Grünheide community, to the German Press Agency.

It is still unclear whether the camp with several tree houses needs to be evacuated. The decision is being weighed and balanced, as the size of the safety perimeter needs to be determined in view of a bomb disposal, said the official, looking at the bomb disposal site. The Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (RBB) had previously reported on the location in the wooded area.

Brandenburg's Interior Minister Michael Stübgen (CDU) had already warned in April of the possibility of contamination of the wooded area with old weapons. This led to a dispute with the Environment Ministry. "We consider the danger to be very high," Stübgen said at the time in the Interior Committee of the Landtag. He had urged Environment Minister Axel Vogel (Greens) to clarify the risk of weapons. The Landesforst is the owner of the land. The only European Tesla factory, which was opened approximately two years ago, is located nearby.

  1. Environmental activists, camping in the same wooded area, have been vocal about their concerns regarding Tesla's factory expansion plans since late February.
  2. Despite the discovery of a World War II bomb near Tesla's electric car factory in Grünheide, Berlin, the fate of the activists' camp with several tree houses remains uncertain.
  3. Tesla's planned factory extension in Brandenburg, a restricted area, has been a subject of demonstrations due to environmental concerns and potential historical artifacts.
  4. Michael Stübgen, Brandenburg's Interior Minister, predicted the risk of contamination with old weapons in the wooded area back in April, leading to tension with the Environment Ministry.
  5. The only European Tesla factory, located nearby in Berlin, has been operating for nearly two years, but its expansion plans have been met with resistance from environmental activists and safety concerns.
  6. In light of the bomb find, the Berlin-Brandenburg Rundfunk had previously reported on the potential hazards hidden within the planned expansion site.
