Discovery of a world war bomb - Bomb disposal in Mainz affected rail traffic
Discovery of a bomber in Mainz led to consequences for the rail traffic in Hessen as well. A spokesperson for Deutsche Bahn stated that during the disposal process in Mainz in the afternoon, affected long-distance trains were rerouted and therefore approximately 30 minutes longer in transit.
According to reports, there were also disruptions at the stations Bingen (Rhein) Hauptbahnhof, Frankfurt Flughafen Fernbahnhof, and Mainz Hauptbahnhof. At times, the personnel of a Mainz switchyard were unable to enter the premises.
The Rhein-Nahe Nahverkehrsverbund (RNN) announced on its homepage after the successful disposal that the operation of the affected lines would be resumed. The Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV) assumed that the R4/14 line Frankfurt-Mainz-Worms-Ludwigshafen would be canceled in its entirety throughout the day. In Mainz, bus and tram stops were also affected.
The unexploded ordnance was discovered by a pedestrian on Tuesday during construction work in Mainz. The detonator was reportedly still intact and difficult to access. Nearly 10,000 residents in Mainz were affected by the evacuation measures.
