Boiling order for drinking water in Vorpommern-Greifswald
Due to contamination of the drinking water, the district of Vorpommern-Greifswald issued a boil-off order for twelve locations on Friday. During an inspection the previous day, limit values were found to have been exceeded at several water extraction points. "Coliform germs and Escherichia coli were detected", according to the statement. The towns of Lubmin, Wusterhusen, Stevelin, Pritzwald, Konerow, Klein Ernsthof, Gustebin, Kräpelin, Vierow, Brünzow, Gahlkow and Loissin Bungalowsiedlung are affected by the boiling order.
"The public health department has issued a boiling order for the drinking water in the area, as a health risk is possible if E-Coli bacteria are detected," it said. "In the worst case, gastrointestinal irritation can occur. Beyond that, no health risks are to be expected."
The Zweckverband Boddenküste pointed out that the water should bubble up briefly. "Personal hygiene (washing, showering, bathing) can be carried out with unboiled water, as long as care is taken to ensure that the water is not drunk or gets into open wounds."
The cause of the contamination is not known, according to the district. The health authority expects final findings on Monday. The health authority is in constant contact with the special-purpose association. The Central Water and Wastewater Association, which is responsible for informing citizens, has informed households affected by the contamination via its website.
To mitigate the potential health risks, it's crucial for residents to follow the boiling order. Adhering to this directive ensures that any harmful E. Coli bacteria are eliminated, ensuring safer consumption of drinking water. Additionally, maintaining good nutrition can bolster the immune system and help individuals better cope with any minor gastrointestinal irritation that may occur.
