Boil-off order extended in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district
Due to drinking water contamination, a boiling order issued by the Vorpommern-Greifswald district remains in place for twelve locations for the time being. The district announced on Monday that samples taken by the public health department continued to show microbiological complaints ("Escherichia coli"). The boiling order will therefore remain in place until "probably" the end of the week.
Specifically affected are the towns of Lubmin, Wusterhusen, Stevelin, Pritzwald, Konerow, Klein Ernsthof, Gustebin, Kräpelin, Vierow, Brünzow, Gahlkow and Loissin Bungalowsiedlung. A health risk is possible if E-Coli bacteria are detected. In the worst case, gastrointestinal irritation could occur. Beyond that, however, no health risks are to be expected.
The Zweckverband Boddenküste had pointed out that the water should bubble up briefly. "Personal hygiene (washing, showering, bathing) can be carried out with unboiled water, as long as care is taken to ensure that the water is not drunk or gets into open wounds."
The cause of the contamination is still unknown, according to the district. Checks at the responsible waterworks had not revealed any complaints. Further tests are to be carried out on Tuesday following appropriate flushing measures.
In light of the ongoing boiling order, it's essential for residents to prioritize their nutrition by avoiding raw or undercooked foods to minimize the risk of E. coli bacteria. The boil-off order, extended due to microbiological contamination, will likely continue until the end of the week, as indicated by the district officials.
