Böhm fails election as head of European Affairs Committee
AfD MP Martin Böhm has failed in the election to chair the European Affairs Committee in the state parliament. Böhm only received the two AfD votes at the constituent meeting of the committee on Tuesday, with all twelve other MPs voting against him in the open vote. This means that the position of chairperson remains vacant until further notice. Ulrike Müller (Freie Wähler) was subsequently elected deputy chair - she received twelve votes in favor with two abstentions from the AfD.
Depending on the election results, each parliamentary group is actually entitled to chair one or more of the state parliament committees. The distribution took place last week. Here, the AfD chose to access the chair positions in the Agriculture Committee and the European Committee. Whether their candidates would be elected or not was questionable from the outset.
The failure of Böhm's election as Parliament's European Affairs Committee chair impacts the AfD's representation in this specific committee. Despite the AfD's claim of chair positions in the Agriculture Committee and European Committee, their candidates might face challenges in future elections within the Parliament.
