- Blue algae in the Quitzdorf reservoir - the Ministry of Health advises against bathing
The local health department of the district of Görlitz is warning against swimming in the Quitzdorf reservoir due to blue-green algae. "Especially vulnerable or at-risk individuals, as well as young children and children, are strongly advised against swimming," the district office of Görlitz announced. Dogs and other warm-blooded animals are also at risk. The results of a water sample taken on Friday showed a strong presence of blue-green algae.
Those who still go into the water should avoid areas with visible streaks and ensure they do not swallow any water. If symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, shortness of breath, skin irritation, or hives occur after swimming, a doctor should be visited immediately and the health department of the district of Görlitz should be informed. The health department warns that the toxic effect can increase if algae-containing water is swallowed for several days in a row.
Blue-green algae mainly appear in standing waters during the summer months with high water temperatures. A bluish-green discoloration of the water and the formation of streaks are signs of the presence of bacteria.
Visitors to the Quitzdorf reservoir in the District of Görlitz should be aware of the health department's warning against swimming due to blue-green algae. If necessary, individuals experiencing symptoms after exposure should seek medical attention and inform the health department of the District of Görlitz.
