- Blue algae in Pirk - Health department warns

The Public Health Office in the Vogtland District has detected an increased presence of blue-green algae in the Pirk Dam and advised against swimming in the water, according to a statement from the Vogtland District Office. At the end of July, initial streaks of green algae were discovered during inspections at the water's edge. Consequently, water samples were taken by the health office last week, which confirmed the suspicion.

The Public Health Office advises caution. If there is cloudy water or green streaks, people should not swim there. Dogs should also refrain from doing so, as they are particularly sensitive.

Seek medical attention immediately if certain symptoms appear

A few days ago, blue-green algae were also discovered in the Quitzdorf Reservoir (district of Görlitz). There too, the health office warned against water use by humans and animals and advised seeking medical attention immediately if symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, shortness of breath, skin irritation, or hives appear.

Blue-green algae mainly occur in standing waters during the summer months at high water temperatures. A bluish-green turbidity of the water and the formation of streaks are signs of the presence of bacteria.

The blue-green algae in standing waters, such as the Pirk Dam and Quitzdorf Reservoir, are a concern for both humans and animals. The nature of these algae can cause harmful health effects, including symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and skin irritation.

To protect themselves and their pets, people should avoid swimming in waters with signs of blue-green algae, such as discoloration or green streaks.
