- Blue algae at the Stettin harbour - warning signs are being put up
Blue-green algae have been detected at multiple bathing spots on the Stettin Lagoon. Affected are the bathing spots in Grambin, Mölkebude, and Bellin (Waldstrand), as reported by the Vorpommern-Greifswald district. Warning signs have been erected to inform bathers about the risks associated with the cyanobacteria.
Blue-green algae can pose a health risk to immunocompromised individuals, those with pre-existing conditions, pregnant women, and young children. Contact with the skin can cause irritation and allergic reactions. Dogs and other animals are also at risk.
Beware of greenish or blue-greenish coloration
The district recommends avoiding areas with visible cyanobacteria growth. The water surface is often greenish or blue-greenish, and sometimes a slimy carpet or cloud-like distribution forms on or in the water.
The formation of cyanobacteria is not uncommon in the summer, according to the district. It depends on wind and weather whether and where accumulations occur. "The situation can change within a few hours. Due to this dynamic development, the possible formation at other locations cannot be ruled out."
Out of over 900 bathing spots at the sea and lakes in MV, there are currently 18 warnings or restrictions for bathers. Often, blue-green algae are the trigger.
The blue-green algae affecting Grambin, Mölkebude, and Bellin (Waldstrand) in the Stettin Lagoon can pose health risks to specific groups, including immunocompromised individuals, those with pre-existing conditions, pregnant women, and young children. Dogs and other animals are also at risk due to their exposure.
To mitigate potential health risks, it's advisable to avoid areas with visible cyanobacteria growth in the Stettin Lagoon, particularly if the water surface appears greenish or blue-greenish.
