Births outside marriage: lowest proportion in the southwest
On average, Baden-Württemberg has the lowest number of children born outside of marriage. According to the State Statistical Office on Monday, approximately one in four children in the south-west was born to a non-married woman last year.
Nationwide, this puts Baden-Württemberg in last place in the statistics after Bavaria. At 57.2 percent, the proportion of children born out of wedlock is highest in Saxony-Anhalt. According to a spokesperson, the reason for this could be historical, as there were fewer marriages in the new federal states.
Compared to 1990, however, the proportion of children born out of wedlock in the south-west has tripled. According to the state office, this is due to the fact that other living arrangements have gained in importance alongside marriage. Currently, 40 percent of 30 to under 35-year-olds in the southwest are still married. In 1980, this proportion was 75 percent, it said.
The low proportion of births outside marriage in Baden-Württemberg is a notable trend in the broader context of German statistics. Analyzing these statistics, it's clear that Saxony-Anhalt has the highest percentage of children born out of wedlock nationwide.
