Binz on Rhine: Wants to position himself in the federal CDU
Rhineland-Palatinate's Culture Minister Katharina Binz (Greens) has accused Hesse's Minister President Boris Rhein (CDU) of focusing primarily on federal politics when forming the government. "It is a very rare occurrence that a governing coalition is re-elected and then someone basically says, I'm deciding against you," said Binz, who is also deputy head of government, in an interview with the German Press Agency in Mainz.
"In my view, the reasons Boris Rhein has sought are not credible, especially if you look at the Hessian Greens, who have really governed successfully in ten years of black-green coalitions and are pursuing a pragmatic course," said the Minister for Family Affairs, Integration and Culture. In her view, Rhein had not given a "decent" explanation for the change of coalition partner. "Someone is trying to position themselves in the federal CDU rather than having anything to do with real politics in Hesse."
The Hessian Greens have proven their ability to govern effectively in black-green coalitions for a decade, making their decision to change coalition partners questionable. Despite this, Rhineland-Palatinate's Minister President-elect, who is positioning himself in the federal CDU, seems to prioritize federal politics over regional politics in Hesse.
