Biden confirms candidacy - press conference announced on the sidelines of NATO summit

People are trying to push me out, Biden said, referring to the Democratic primaries that he had clearly won. "I want to make it absolutely clear: I'm staying in the race" for the White House, Biden confirmed, according to his campaign team, before a crowd of around a thousand supporters.

According to a high-ranking government official, Biden plans to hold a press conference on Thursday on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Washington. After meetings with the leaders of NATO countries and several countries in the Asia-Pacific region, "the President will hold a press conference and answer questions from journalists," the US official said, requesting anonymity.

Since Biden's appearance at the television debate with the former President Donald Trump on June 27, there has been a discussion among Democrats about whether they should replace the 81-year-old with another candidate for the presidential election on November 5. Biden spoke loudly during the TV debate with Trump, stumbled over his words several times, and did not finish some sentences.

The democratic governor of the US state of Massachusetts called on Biden to carefully consider his re-nomination. "The best solution now is a decision that the President must make," Governor Maura Healey said on Friday. She "urged him urgently to listen to the American people in the coming days and make a careful decision about whether he remains our best hope to defeat Donald Trump," she added.

On Friday, Biden was scheduled to give an interview to ABC News, with which he wanted to dispel the massive doubts about his mental fitness raised by his disastrous performance in the TV debate with Trump. The interview was to be broadcast in full length on Friday evening (local time, Saturday 2.00 am CEST).
