Biden calls on US citizens after Trump attack for unity

One day after the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, US-President Joe Biden called on his fellow citizens for unity. 'We must come together as a nation to show who we are', Biden said in a short speech he gave at the White House on Sunday. He had 'a short but good conversation' with Trump.

simultaneously, 81-year-old Biden announced that he would address the nation on Sunday evening (local time). No information is known yet about the motives of the alleged shooter, Biden added and asked not to speculate about his motives or connections.

Previously, he had inquired about the investigation into the attack from the heads of the US FBI and the Secret Service. He postponed a Monday visit to Texas.

At a campaign rally in the small town of Butler in the US state of Pennsylvania on Saturday, shots were fired at former President Trump. The 78-year-old narrowly escaped an assassination attempt and sustained only a light injury to his right ear. The alleged shooter, a 20-year-old, was killed.

At the Republican Party nomination convention beginning on Monday, Trump is expected to be officially declared the Republican Party's presidential candidate. The right-wing populist will then face off against Joe Biden on November 5, against whom he narrowly lost the 2020 election.

In the polls, Trump has recently been able to build up a lead over Biden. The 81-year-old incumbent has been confronted with significant doubts about his mental and physical fitness since his disastrous TV debate performance against Trump last month.
