Process - BGH hears case on severed head in front of regional court building

He allegedly placed a human head in front of the Bonn district court building - Today (9.30 a.m.), the Federal Court of Justice (BGH) is hearing the conviction of a man for disturbing the peace of the dead. In January, the Bonn Regional Court sentenced the man to one and a half years in prison without parole. Both the defendant and the public prosecutor's office appealed against the decision. It remains to be seen when the Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe will hand down its verdict. (Ref. 2 StR 270/23)

According to the findings of the regional court, the man had placed the head of his friend, who had previously died of tuberculosis, in front of the court in June 2022. The two are said to have been homeless. The court was unable to determine with certainty whether the man had also cut off the head beforehand. After the crime, the man is said to have followed what happened next. During the trial, the then 39-year-old remained silent about the allegations. His motivation remained unclear.

During the trial, witnesses were shocked by the sight they saw in front of the court building. One woman reported that her son had shouted: "Mom, mom, there's a head lying there." She herself had initially thought it was a macabre joke.
