Europe Cup - BG Göttingen misses victory in Bilbao at the last second

BG Göttingen failed to spring a surprise at the start of the second group stage of the Fiba Europe Cup. In the first game on Wednesday evening, the German basketball club was beaten 73:75 (45:44) by Spanish club Surne Bilbao Basket, which was considered one of the favorites, despite a strong performance.

The team of Head Coach Olivier Foucart got off to a poor start. The home side led 11:2 after just under five minutes, but the club from Lower Saxony improved as the game progressed and tied the scores at 15:15 in the first quarter thanks to a three by Umoja Gibson. Bilbao pulled away again midway through the second period, but BG did not let itself be shaken off and fought its way back into the game once more.

The action on court repeated itself after the break. Bilbao managed to pull slightly ahead again, but Göttingen tied the scores at 64:64 with six minutes remaining. The game was finally decided with one second remaining when Göttingen's best scorer Fedor Zugic (16 points) of all players missed a two-pointer to make it 73:74. At the other end, Thijs De Ridder scored the final points with a free throw.
