Crime - Beuth: Spectators should boo violent soccer fans

Hesse's Interior Minister Peter Beuth (CDU) is calling for more mass protests by spectators at Bundesliga soccer matches against violent fans. He would like "the rest of the stadium to stand up" in the event of excesses and "boo the violent offenders", said the outgoing minister on Tuesday in the state parliament's interior committee in Wiesbaden. A clear stance was needed here. The Interior Committee primarily dealt with the riots on the sidelines of the Bundesliga soccer match between Eintracht Frankfurt and VfB Stuttgart (1:2) on November 25, which left more than 200 people injured.

"I'm a passionate soccer fan myself. I can fully understand emotions. But they must not leave the appropriate framework," warned Beuth, who is also Minister of Sport. He is annoyed when certain fans provoke police officers on Saturdays with slogans such as "All cops are bastards" and with "bull chants". At the Frankfurt-Stuttgart match, barriers, sanitary equipment, doors, a barbecue and bottles were thrown at police officers.

Beuth spoke of 57 injured police officers and 16 injured stewards at this match. According to initial estimates, 300 to 400 people took part in the riots. 19 preliminary proceedings have been initiated so far - for example for breach of the peace, assault and resisting arrest.
