Bertelsmann Stiftung: Not enough daycare places until 2030

Daycare centers have been built in Schleswig-Holstein for years. Nevertheless, the supply is not yet sufficient to meet demand. According to the Bertelsmann Stiftung, it may take a few more years before all parents looking for a place for their child can find one.

Bertelsmann Stiftung: Not enough daycare places until 2030

According to a study by the Bertelsmann Stiftung, the demand for daycare places in Schleswig-Holstein will probably not be met until 2030. According to the Bertelsmann Stiftung, the rate of children under the age of three in daycare in the northernmost federal state is 36%, which is exactly the national average. However, 49 percent of parents actually wanted childcare for their child in this age group. For children aged three and over, the childcare rate of 89 percent is below the national average of 92 percent. Here, 97 percent of parents would need child daycare.

As a result, the federal state lacked 15,600 daycare places to meet the needs of parents. This was revealed by the Bertelsmann Stiftung's calculations for the current "State Monitoring of Early Childhood Education Systems".

According to the study, 53% of nursery children in Schleswig-Holstein are looked after in groups with inappropriate staffing ratios. In the crèche groups, one full-time specialist is mathematically responsible for 3.5 children in full-day care. This falls short of the ratio of 1 to 3 recommended by the Bertelsmann Foundation. In the kindergarten groups, one specialist is responsible for 7.4 children. This is slightly more favorable than the child-friendly staffing ratio of 1 to 7.5 recommended by the Bertelsmann Stiftung for this type of group.

In order to improve the situation, daycare centers in Schleswig-Holstein need more staff. However, according to the Bertelsmann Stiftung's current "Fachkräfte-Radar für KiTa und Grundschule", the state will have a shortage of 1,700 specialists by 2025 just to meet the childcare needs of parents. There would be enough staff available by 2030 - but only if parental demand remains at the current level.
