In future, the almost four million visitors to Berlin's state museums will have to pay more to see Nefertiti or the works of Gerhard Richter. The museums must react to the increased costs, said Hermann Parzinger, President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, which is responsible for the museums, in a statement on Wednesday.

"Like many cultural institutions, we are also dealing with a very tight budget situation, which means that we have to increase income and reduce expenditure." In an international comparison, museum visits in Berlin nevertheless remain affordable.

Tickets for the Altes Museum, Alte Nationalgalerie, Bode-Museum, Gemäldegalerie and Museum für Fotografie will in future cost 12 instead of 10 euros. Tickets for Hamburger Bahnhof - Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart, Neue Nationalgalerie, Neues Museum and Pergamonmuseum (Panorama) will cost 14 euros instead of the previous 12 euros. The Museum of Decorative Arts, Museum of European Cultures, Museum of Musical Instruments, Scharf-Gerstenberg Collection, Art Library, Museum of Prints and Drawings and Köpenick Palace will also each charge two euros more. Admission to the Friedrichswerder Church, the Ethnological Museum and the Museum of Asian Art in the Humboldt Forum remains free.
