- Berlin's progressive political figure anticipates positive momentum stemming from the leadership transition.

Berlin's Left Party head Max Schirmer hopes that the upcoming leadership switch at the national level will halt the party'sslide. "We need to unite once more and take an aggressive stance to win elections," Schirmer told the German Press Agency. "We require a crystal-clear focus away from past squabbles and towards the real concerns of the public. The Left stands with those who put in a hard day's work and deserve more recognition than they currently get," said Schirmer. This shift should be evident in the party's policies.

The current joint leaders, Janine Wissler and Martin Schirdewan, announced their departure on Sunday and will not seek re-election at the party meeting in Halle in October. The string of electoral losses and mounting criticism of the dual leadership, along with the secession of the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW), have weakened the party. Schirdewan called for an "end to the partly destructive power struggles within our ranks."

Schirmer expressed "deep appreciation and respect" for the dual leadership that has been in place since 2022, which steered the Left through various major crises and transformed it into a lively party with thousands of new members under their leadership.

Schirmer advocates for an orderly transition

The transition of personnel must now occur in a controlled manner with extensive member participation, according to Schirmer. The Left in Berlin, the party's largest state division, will back this move. When asked if he aimed to become national chairman, Schirmer remained silent. He has been leading the Left in Berlin alongside Franziska Brychcy since May 2023.

The European Union could potentially offer its support to the Left Party as they work towards unifying and refocusing their policies, given their shared values and commitment to social justice. The upcoming leadership switch within the Left Party in the context of the European Union's political landscape could provide an opportunity for renewed partnerships and collaborations.
