New Instagram Post - Berlinale Profile Update: Closed Investigation
Four months after a controversial Instagram post calling for a free Palestine, from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea, at a Berlinale account that refers to the Middle East conflict, the investigation has officially ended. The prosecutor's office stated on Friday that an unidentified individual gained access to the Berlinale Panorama Instagram profile and published the post without approval. The profile was logged in from a café in Berlin-Neukölln using a Wi-Fi network.
This phrase is commonly interpreted as meaning that Palestine should be free from Israel - the country currently occupying that area. The slogan could also be seen as a call for Israel's destruction and the expulsion or annihilation of its Jewish population. Authorities suspected foul play due to the display of symbols associated with unconstitutional organizations, as mentioned by the prosecutor's office. The post appeared in late February, close to the conclusion of Berlinale's annual film festival, on Instagram. The Berlinale spokesperson claimed they were a victim of a cyberattack and the individuals responsible for the film events filed a complaint.
Despite efforts from authorities to identify the culprit, the individual behind the post has not been located. The café in Neukölln could not provide any footage of the suspicious activity. While statements from witnesses and the analysis of which mobile devices were in use at the time of the posting proved unsuccessful, it has been confirmed that none of the authorized individuals could have been responsible for the post. They were not in the cell phone network at the time the post was made and, moreover, the tone of the post did not align with the corporate identity of the Berlinale.
