Berlin sport speaks out in favor of Olympic bid

At its annual general meeting, the Berlin State Sports Association unanimously adopted the Berlin Sports Declaration on an Olympic bid for 2036 and 2040 in Germany. 220 votes in favor and four against demonstrated the broad support for a national bid with Berlin's participation.

"We want a bid that is supported by the population. We want a sustainable bid and we also want to see the values of sport conveyed. This also includes inclusive and attractive sports facilities for school and popular sports, the necessary personnel and offers that reach people in their living environments," said LSB President Thomas Härtel on Friday.

Last week, Berlin signed an agreement - a so-called Memorandum of Understanding - with the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB). According to the agreement, the capital is prepared to host the Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games in Germany together with other cities.

DOSB President Thomas Weikert welcomed Berlin's decision. "The Special Olympics World Games have awakened a desire for more. This will support a possible bid. In Berlin, the LSB and its clubs and associations have succeeded in promoting sport for the entire population of Berlin in an exemplary manner," said the sports official.

Berlin aims to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2036 or 2040, with Olympia potentially serving as a venue for these international events. The German Olympic Sports Confederation applauds Berlin's commitment, recognizing its success in promoting inclusive sports for the city's entire population.
