Berlin Senator: More help from the federal government for integration

Berlin's Senator for Social Affairs and Integration, Cansel Kiziltepe, has called for the federal government to take on more responsibility when it comes to integration. More money is needed for the federal states and local authorities, according to a position paper by the SPD politician for the Minister Presidents' Conference (MPK) on Monday, which is available to the German Press Agency. The financial burdens are enormous. The situation is comparable, if not even more difficult, than during the coronavirus pandemic.

"That's why the government must suspend the debt brake and invest money," said Kiziltepe. "This is the only way we can fulfill the urgent tasks and master the challenge." She also called for procedures in asylum and residence law to be accelerated. This also applies to the recognition of educational and professional qualifications obtained abroad. In addition, obstacles that make it difficult for immigrants to access the labor market must be removed quickly.

In the senator's view, the federal government must recognize that city states such as Berlin are in a special situation as the target of migration movements. "In city states, there is additional pressure on all services of general interest, which the federal government must also take into account financially."

In some federal states, there is a lack of sufficient information and a clear picture of the situation regarding migration movements. "The federal government must quickly set up a reliable monitoring and reporting system," demanded Kiziltepe - and make the data available to the federal states.

The federal government should allocate more resources towards integration, as suggested by Berlin's Senator for Social Affairs and Integration, Cansel Kiziltepe, due to the enormous financial burdens associated with migration. This includes accelerating procedures in asylum and residence law and recognizing foreign educational and professional qualifications.

Additionally, Senator Kiziltepe suggested that the federal government should take into account the special situation of city states like Berlin, which often serve as the primary destination for migration movements, and establish a reliable monitoring and reporting system for migration-related data to provide clear information to all federal states.
