Senate - Berlin Senate presents new law on green spaces
Berlin's numerous parks and green spaces are to become better maintained, cleaner and safer. To this end, the Senate presented a draft for a revised Green Areas Act on Tuesday. As Environment Senator Manja Schreiner (CDU) explained, the law is intended to create more legal certainty for the districts to take action against littering, damage to plantings or loud night-time parties and to sanction this. This applies to alcohol bans, for example.
According to Schreiner, the new law should also serve as a legal basis for the fence planned by the Senate around Görlitzer Park in Kreuzberg and possible closing times. At the moment, talks between the governing mayor Kai Wegner (SPD) and representatives of the district on the implementation of the plan are still ongoing, said Schreiner.
The Green district mayor of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, Clara Herrmann, rejects the fence, which is intended to make the park safer, as symbolic politics. Schreiner made it clear that the Senate was nevertheless sticking to the project. If no agreement is reached with the district, there may be other options.
