Urban development - Berlin Senate discusses the future of Tempelhofer Feld

The Berlin Senate will be discussing the possible future design of Tempelhofer Feld on Tuesday (10.00 am). Urban development and construction senator Christian Gaebler (SPD) intends to submit a bill on the subject. In the coalition agreement, the black-red Senate has agreed to an international ideas competition on how the site of the former airport in Berlin-Tempelhof could be designed. The black-red coalition is in favor of peripheral development, with the majority of the area to remain free.

However, even this could not be implemented quite so easily: in a referendum on May 25, 2014, a majority of voters voted not to build on the field at all, but to leave it as it is. This was also stipulated in a law. The Senate must abide by it. In view of the housing shortage in Berlin, however, the discussion about this has increased.

Just last Tuesday, the Senate introduced an amendment to the law that would allow more refugee accommodation to be built on Tempelhofer Feld if necessary. This means that further areas in the north of the field on Columbiadamm could be used for additional container accommodation.

In addition, the continued operation of an existing container settlement for refugees there will be legally secured. Both are limited until 2028. This change alone would not allow the field to be developed with apartments - not even on the edge. For this, the Tempelhofer Feld Act would have to be amended again.
