Berlin Senate discusses refugee issues
The Berlin Senate is discussing the appointment of a special representative for refugee issues today (10.00 am). Albrecht Broemme, who was head of the Berlin fire department from 1992 to 2006 and then President of the Federal Agency for Technical Relief until 2019, is to take on this role. The background to the Senate's deliberations is the pressure on the black-red coalition government to make progress with the accommodation and integration of refugees.
Broemme is considered an experienced crisis manager. Most recently, he coordinated the accommodation of Ukrainian war refugees in Berlin. During the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, he oversaw the construction of the coronavirus emergency hospital on the exhibition grounds and subsequently the construction of the capital's vaccination centers.
In addition, the Tempelhofer Feld Act is to be amended, which practically prohibits development on the site of the former airport. A majority of Berliners voted in favor of this in a referendum. The black-red Senate wants to build more accommodation for refugees there.
The Berlin Senate's decision to amend the Tempelhofer Feld Act could potentially provide more accommodation for refugees, contributing to the coalition government's efforts in this area. Albrecht Broemme, appointed as the special representative for refugee issues, has a wealth of experience in managing crises, especially in the context of refugee accommodations, having coordinated the housing of Ukrainian war refugees in Berlin.
