Berlin is streamlining the process of generating solar energy from your own balcony and is expanding support for this effort. This news was released on Friday by the Economic Administration. Now, a subsidy of up to 500 euros is also available for plug-in solar systems with a power of up to 800 watts. The limit used to be 600 watts. The administrative hassle of registering with Stromnetz Berlin has been eliminated as well. The funding criteria have also been updated to allow tenants and owners of small or recreational gardens to receive funding for each inverter-mounted solar system.

The application for funding must be submitted before purchasing the device, also called a balcony power station. If the installation costs are less than 500 euros, full funding is provided. If it costs more, the buyer must cover the remaining expenses.

Increasing solar energy to push for climate neutrality

These changes are a result of the recently passed Solar Package I at the federal level. The consumer-friendly adjustments will be implemented into the funding guidelines of the Berlin Solarplus program by May 31st, according to the Economic Administration. As per the Senate's plans, Berlin should become climate neutral well before 2045. One method to accomplish this goal is by expanding solar energy production on rooftops and balconies.

"We're making the energy transition more manageable in our homes," said Economy Senator Franziska Giffey (SPD). "Berlin has great potential for solar energy: on balconies, roofs, in gardens. This must be harnessed to meet our goal of 25% solar power in Berlin's energy generation by 2035." The Economic Administration reported that 7,718 subsidies for plug-in solar systems had been approved by the end of April. There is a budget of seven million euros for this program, enough to fund 14,000 balcony power plants.
