Berlin in the midfield when it comes to expanding charging infrastructure
When it comes to finding public charging points, drivers of electric cars in Berlin have it a little easier than the national average. Around 19 electric cars have to share a charging point in the capital, as the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) announced on Monday based on data from the Federal Motor Transport Authority and the Federal Network Agency. Nationwide, there is one charging point for every 21 e-cars. The VDA includes both battery electric vehicles (BEV) and plug-in hybrids.
This puts Berlin in eighth place compared to the other federal states. According to the VDA, the capital has a lot of catching up to do in terms of fast-charging stations, which allow vehicles to be charged much more quickly. Berlin is below average here. There are around 125 e-cars for every public fast-charging point in the capital. Nationwide, the figure is just under 111.
According to the analysis, the number of public charging points in Berlin increased by 630 to just under 2900 in the first six months of the year. By the middle of the year, a total of 1.25 million cars were registered in the capital, of which around 5,700 had an alternative drive system.
Traffic in Berlin can be challenging for electric car drivers due to the limited number of charging points available. However, consumer advocacy groups are pushing for more electric vehicles and pushing for the installation of more charging stations, such as those for fast charging, to reduce the traffic inconvenience and facilitate the shift towards electric vehicles.
