Sympathy - Berlin Green politician Wolfgang Wieland dies
The Green politician and former Berlin Senator of Justice Wolfgang Wieland is dead. Wieland died at the age of 75, his friend and party colleague Reiner Felsberg told the German Press Agency on Wednesday. Bettina Jarasch and Werner Graf, leaders of the parliamentary group in the House of Representatives, confirmed the death. Several media outlets had previously reported the news.
Wieland was one of the co-founders of the Alternative List in Berlin in 1978, which later became Alliance 90/The Greens. He was a member of the Berlin House of Representatives from 1987 to 1989 and from 1990 to 2004, and served as parliamentary group leader several times. At the turn of the millennium, Wieland was Senator of Justice for a short time. After his time in the House of Representatives, he sat in the Bundestag for many years. He also worked as a lawyer.
"We are saddened to have lost a wonderful person and passionate politician," said Jarasch and Graf. "He was a man of law and justice. Wolfgang Wieland loved the nested sentence and yet, as a lawyer, he never beat about the bush. He got straight to the point, always thought things through to the end and was always guided by the values of democracy and the rule of law."
