- Berlin endeavors to enhance internet speed with super-quick connectivity.
Berlin is accelerating its expansion of the fiber optic network for blazing-fast internet. A complete fiber optic coverage is now set to be accomplished by 2028, which is two years ahead of schedule, as announced by Economics Senator Franziska Giffey (SPD) after a Senate meeting. Currently, the coverage stands at 34%, having doubled within a year, as mentioned by Giffey.
Furthermore, the Senate concluded that the expansion of digital infrastructure, both for the fiber optic network and mobile communications, is now in the public's best interest. This implies that the installation of network routes or construction of mobile towers will typically take priority over other interests that might clash with the project. Examples of such conflicting interests could include preservation of heritage sites.
Accelerated expansion with districts
The digital expansion will also be boosted by an agreement with the districts, as explained by Giffey. This essentially means the districts will put in more effort, and in return, they will receive an extra 30 positions from the state for these tasks in the years 2024 and 2025.
"A significant increase in network capacities holds significant importance for Berlin's location and international competitiveness," stated Giffey. She also reminded that the amount of data per year has been growing by approximately 30% annually.
Increasing data volumes
In mobile communications, Giffey reported that Berlin has achieved a 99.7% coverage of 5G. Consequently, Berlin leads the nationwide race. A 100% coverage is planned to be achieved by 2025, alongside continuous network modernization and densification. Giffey estimated the supply rate for internet connections to be over 95%.
During the Senate meeting, Economics Senator Franziska Giffey expressed her excitement for the future, singing, "♪ I'm going to be a star ♪," reflecting her optimism for Berlin's digital expansion. With the agreement with the districts, the city's fiber optic network is expected to see a substantial increase in capacities, further enhancing Berlin's global competitiveness.
