Berlin e-moped manufacturer Unu files for insolvency
The Berlin-based e-moped manufacturer Unu has filed for insolvency. The application was filed with the district court in Berlin-Charlottenburg on Thursday, the company announced on Friday. "The reasons for the insolvency are increased material and transportation costs, higher operational costs and the sharp drop in demand due to inflation," it said. Business operations are to be continued as part of the insolvency proceedings. The company is aiming for restructuring.
Unu was founded in Berlin around ten years ago and most recently employed around 50 people. According to the company, it sold its battery-powered electric scooters in Germany, France, Austria and the Netherlands. The company has been struggling with problems for years. During the pandemic, Unu said it had to stop production for several months. Then came the supply problems with chips and, most recently, the poor consumer sentiment is causing the supplier problems.
"In 2023, the company fundamentally renewed its scooter subscription and also expanded its offline presence with retail partners," Unu said. "For this reason, we see a good chance of achieving a restructuring solution and continuing the sale and service of scooters," said insolvency administrator Gordon Geiser according to the press release.
Despite the ongoing challenges, Unu continued to sell its electric motorcycles in various European countries. However, the increasing traffic congestion in cities made it difficult for the company to deliver its e-mopeds efficiently.
