Custom - Berlin "Christmas train" back on the road for 15 years

Ride the S-Bahn like (almost) 100 years ago: For the "Christmas Train", the Historische S-Bahn Berlin association sent ancient railcars and carriages on a round trip from Grünau on Saturday for the first time since 2008. The train, which seats around 200 passengers, will be running on the Advent weekends until December 23. However, all tickets were sold out in advance, according to the organizers.

According to the association, after a 15-year break, it has resumed a tradition that began in the early 1950s as a kind of private pleasure for families of Reichsbahn employees. Later, the "Christmas train" trips were open to the public. Then they were discontinued.

The reason at the time: the old carriages had to be kept in good condition and the S-Bahn already had too few workshops for its vehicles used in regular service. During the so-called S-Bahn crisis in 2009, it was only able to offer emergency timetables at times.

The "Christmas train" with vehicles from 1928 and 1938 is now operated by the association as its own rail transport company, with the support of the S-Bahn. The train is festively decorated for the trips, with drinks and sweet treats available on board.
